Use a straight-from-camera file. Screenshots, messaging-app copies and edited exports commonly lose the MakerNotes that may contain a counter. Maximum file size: 128 MiB.
What a shutter count can—and cannot—mean
No universal EXIF field
Cameras may store mechanical actuations, total shutter releases, image counts or no usable lifetime counter. PhotoDataLab labels only evidence it can distinguish.
Electronic shutters differ
A manufacturer counter may include electronic operation, exclude it or expose a separate field. A generic number is never automatically called mechanical actuations.
Not a condition report
A count does not prove condition, ownership, authenticity, remaining shutter life or that an uploaded file is original and unmodified.
Current support is deliberately conservative
Initial verified paths are limited to reviewed fixture-backed Nikon, Pentax and one narrowly scoped Canon model/file combination. Other Canon and Sony files may contain counter-like MakerNotes, but a number is withheld until its exact meaning and model layout are supported by a reviewed fixture.
Fujifilm ExposureCount can describe exposures used for one image, while
ImageCount may reset. Neither is presented as a reliable lifetime shutter count.
Olympus/OM System and Panasonic service-menu counters are not treated as ordinary photo metadata.
Inspect related camera metadata
Use the EXIF Viewer when you need a local view of ordinary camera, lens and exposure metadata. For a Fujifilm model reference, use the Fujifilm Serial Number Lookup; it does not determine shutter count, warranty, authenticity or manufacturing date.
