Print size from pixel dimensions
Pixels needed for a physical print
Effective PPI at a target print size
Print size formulas
Pixels to inches
print inches = pixels ÷ PPI
Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimeters or by 25.4 for millimeters.
Print size to pixels
required pixels = print inches × target PPI
The calculator rounds required pixel dimensions upward so the target density is not undershot.
Effective PPI
effective PPI = pixels ÷ print inches
If aspect ratios differ, horizontal and vertical values explain the limiting dimension.
PPI and printer DPI are not the same measurement
PPI means pixels per inch and describes how densely an image's pixels are placed in the finished print. DPI means dots per inch and describes how a printer places ink or toner dots. A printer may use several dots to reproduce one image pixel, so its advertised DPI is not the PPI value to enter here. “300 DPI photo” is a common phrase, but 300 PPI is the relevant image-resolution target.
Choosing a PPI target
300 PPI is a common high-detail starting point for prints viewed closely. 240 or 200 PPI can still produce useful results in many workflows, while larger prints viewed from farther away often work at lower density such as 150 PPI. These are planning references, not a guarantee of print quality. Focus, motion blur, sharpening, compression, resampling, paper and the printer also affect the result.
