A practical reference for professional photography metadata

What PhotoDataLab does

PhotoDataLab turns metadata observed in public portfolios of professional photographers into useful reference pages and focused tools. The photography tools let you inspect and remove EXIF metadata in your browser, check what a photo reveals before you share it, read a shutter counter or Fujifilm serial from an original camera file, and calculate print size and exposure. The data pages show how cameras, lenses and exposure settings appear across the project's observational dataset.

Why the data includes context

A raw photo count can be misleading when one contributor supplies a large share of the sample. Data pages therefore show photograph counts, distinct professional photographers, contributor concentration, date coverage and completeness alongside the distributions. Photographer-balanced measurements reduce the influence of unusually large portfolios.

Observed, not prescribed

The dataset describes what was recorded; it does not declare the most frequent camera, lens or setting to be the best choice. Album genres are derived from explicit public album-name signals and are useful for grouping observations, not as ground-truth labels for every photograph. The methodology documents these limits and publication thresholds.

Professional photographers are the source population, but this does not mean every photograph was a paid assignment or that the sample represents every working photographer, market or specialty.

Privacy by design

Most tools — the EXIF Viewer, Metadata Remover, Photo Privacy Checker, Photo Location Finder and the calculators — read the selected file locally in the browser and do not upload it. The Camera Shutter Count Checker is the one exception: it briefly uploads the file to run ExifTool, deletes it straight after the check, and says so before you consent. Public data pages do not reproduce or hotlink photographer images, publish GPS coordinates, or expose private account and contact data.

Independent product

PhotoDataLab is an independent photography data product. It is not an official service of a camera or lens manufacturer, and product names remain the property of their respective owners. The project is developed and maintained by Ritkey.
